Loss has a way of changing the shape of our lives.
It can feel like the earth has opened beneath us—leaving a space so wide and empty we can’t imagine ever crossing it. But sometimes, if we look closely, that same loss becomes a bridge. A path we never expected to walk. A connection we never imagined we’d find.

In What Love Leaves Behind, two people—Etta, a nurse longing for motherhood, and Darren, a father paralyzed by grief—are brought together by the children left in their care. Both are broken in different ways. Both are searching for something to hold onto. What neither expects is that love will find a way to weave their fractured lives into something new.

When I wrote this story, I kept thinking about how love doesn’t always vanish when someone we care about is gone. It lingers—in the way we remember their laughter, in the lessons they left us, in the choices we make to honor them. Sometimes, it lingers in the people who step into our lives when we least expect it.

Loss, in that way, becomes a bridge—linking who we were before with who we can become after.

I’ve seen this truth play out in my own life, too. Moments when heartbreak gave birth to empathy. When pain made room for purpose. When a closed chapter turned into a doorway to something greater, it’s never easy. But it’s real. And it’s where healing begins.

Because maybe love doesn’t end when it leaves—it transforms. It builds bridges between the past and the future, between grief and determination, between two people who learn, against all odds, to look for new beginnings.

So if you’ve ever lost something—or someone—and wondered if the ache would ever fade, hold on to this: love has a way of crossing even the widest distance. And sometimes, what it leaves behind is exactly what carries us forward.
